Abstract
backhaul. An arrangement by which a cargo is carried for all or part of a return journey of a tanker. More frequently, however, a return journey is usually made in BALLAST. Backhaul is in contrast to crosshaul in which vessels carrying similar crude or products sail the same route, but in opposite directions. In such a situation it would seem to be logical that the cargoes should be exchanged rather than transported. This, however, is not always possible.
