Abstract
Birthweight standards are important: they are used widely, both in the clinical assessment of the neonate and in epidemiological research. It is important, therefore, to understand them: the basis on which they have been and might be derived and how they relate to maternal characteristics and other features of the pregnancy. It is only in the light of this understanding that they can best be exploited whether for clinical or research purposes.
