Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to explore the concept of expert systems. It would be gratifying if we could start with an exact definition and proceed from there. However, Artificial Intelligence is such a young discipline — mere decades rather than centuries old — and expert systems such a recent application of this discipline that there has not been sufficient time for terminology to crystallise. Concepts of the field are still shifting and boundaries are hazy; so any attempt at strict and exact definitions is doomed to failure.
