The dictionary defines an amplifier as a device which gives greater loudness. The circuits in this chapter certainly do this, by accepting the small signals from the preamplifier circuits of chapter 3 of about 500 mV or so, synthesiser or organ circuits from later chapters, or microphone signals direct. The power amplifier supplies sufficient power to the loudspeaker to enable the speech coil to move in and out by the required amount.
