Abstract

Why do people go to work? The obvious answer is that people go to work to earn money so they can buy all the things they need. What sorts of things do they need? Again the answer is fairly obvious. They want nice clothes, tasty food, enjoyable holidays, nice accommodation and all the other things which go with a high standard of living. We live in a materialist society and we tend to judge success and failure in terms of our material possessions. Whether this is how it should be is another question.
