The essence of the course which follows is basic business knowledge such as needs to be known and understood by anyone intending to find an interesting job in industry or commerce. One cannot begin to discuss business problems without some basic knowledge and the underlying course aims to convey certain data as a prelude to the group discussions. The lecture notes cover the syllabuses of a number of different courses, but this should not be surprising. Whether students are training to be secretaries or supervisors and managers in the retail trade or commerce generally, they will need to know how businesses are organised, the sorts of problems they face and the different roles people are called to play in the business world. Similarly workers in the nationalised industries or those employed by local authorities will find themselves involved with all types of private enterprises. The more they understand about all aspects of the business scene the more effectively they will be able to play their future roles.
