Abstract

O’Casey’s next full-length play, dealing with the insurgence of Easter Week in Dublin in 1916, ‘A Tragedy in Four Acts’, cemented his reputation as undoubtedly the greatest and most successful playwright the Abbey Theatre has produced; and, in the opinion of the directorate themselves, The Plough and the Stars is ‘a fine play, possibly the best work I have yet done’, he wrote enthusiastically to Macmillan and Company, his publishers.
