Abstract

It has been shown earlier that the response of a record/playback system may look as shown in the diagram (right)
The ideal response is one which is flat, and the process of producing a response which is as even as possible over the bandwidth of the system is known as equalisation. The response shown can be equalised for record or playback, but usually a combination of both is used. When introducing equalisation, it is necessary to consider the signal-to-noise ratio and distortion caused by over-equalisation.
