Abstract

Historically, definitions of mental deficiency have largely centred around notions of social competence. Implicit in this concept is the idea that the adjustment of people with similar intellectual deficits will depend largely on factors loosely termed adaptive capacity, behaviour, temperament, personality, or superadded psychiatric disorder.
