Discussing what should be understood by object in his article ‘Function and Concept’ (Frege 1952a), Frege wrote:

I regard a regular definition as impossible, since we haye here something too simple to admit of logical analysis. It is only possible to indicate what is meant. Here I can only say briefly: An object is anything that is not a function, so that an expression for it does not contain any empty place (p. 32).
