The following four productions have been selected for special consideration in this section:

• 1. The Old Vic Theatre Company’s presentation at the Assembly Hall, Edinburgh, on 22 August 1961, restaged at the Old Vic Theatre, London on 14 September 1961; director: Michael Benthall; Faustus: Paul Daneman; Mephostophilis: Michael Goodliffe; Lucifer: Robert Eddison; Chorus: Walter Hudd; designer: Michael Annals.

• 2. The rsc production at the Memorial Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon, on 27 June 1968; director: Clifford Williams; Faustus: Eric Porter; Mephostophilis: Terrence Hardirnan; Chorus: Clifford Rose; designer: Abd’ Elkader Farrah.
