Abstract

I am able to take a very detached view about the outbreak of the Polish war, because I spent the whole summer of 1939 in Savoy, and only returned to England the day after the war started. Thus I am little influenced by contemporary impressions. My own impression in Savoy was quite simple — it was enshrined in a simple judgement: ‘These people won’t fight’. Although it looked as if I was wrong when the war broke out, it turned out soon that I was quite right.
