Abstract

The enzymatic methylation of phospholipids has been associated with changes in various biophysical and pharmacological properties of a number of membrane localized events. Stimulation of the methylation of membrane phospholipids has been associated with increases in erythrocyte membrane fluidity, histamine release, and increases in the number of beta adrenoreceptors as well as increases in membrane localized enzymatic activity (Hirata and Axelrod, 1981). This study was designed to examine the relationship between phospholipid methylation (PLM) and the uptake of norepinephrine (NE) into cortical synaptosomes, a carrier mediated facilitated diffusion, by inhibiting S-adenosyl-L-methionine (AdoMet) dependent methylations.
