Summary

By suitable setting conditions the economy in grinding can be improved. Grinding wheels with a coating of cubic-boron nitride did not for all machining tasks show a better economy compared with EK-grinding wheels. Investigations were accomplished at external plunge grinding with a straight cylindrical resin bonded CBN-grinding wheel. The cutting speed was increased up to 120 m/s. The efficiency could be improved by higher cutting speeds. At the same time the quality characterized by formal defects and roughness was increased. A thermic influence on the workpiece external zone was not observed. A limiting metal removal rate can be defined. Is this limit exceeded, the wheel topography of the grinding wheel breaks down. A high wheel wear occurs. The limited metal removal rate appeared regardless of the cutting speed at the same load.
