Summary

This paper summarizes the characteristics of the modular multiprocessor system MPST and outlines its flexibility by means of various applications. The system, comprising appropriate hardware components and standardized software has been developed in order to facilitate the design of economical controls for special purpose machines.

The basic idea is the partition of the overall NC function required by the specific machining process into several function blocks. The tasks of these function blocks are allocated to similar microcomputer modules by means of programming. The paper starts outlining the basic structures and the standardized hardware and software interfaces. This part is followed by the description of some of the available hardware components. Finally various applications of this CNC system for machines, such as for example turning machines, gear producing machines and a measuring machine are describes.
