Abstract

The number of people in Britain aged 65 or more make up almost 15 per cent of the population and their numbers are increasing. The age structure of people over retiring age is also changing. In the last two decades the number of people over 65 years has increased by more than 25 per cent and population projections suggest that, by the end of the century there will be approximately 16 per cent more people aged 75 and over and 50 per cent more aged 85 and over than there are now (Central Statistical Office, 1981).
