Abstract

Coal and oil belong to the family of fossil fuels which also includes natural gas, oil shales, tar sands and peat. Although all fossil fuels may be broadly regarded as hydrocarbon compounds, there are significant chemical differences which, in particular, determine the possible approaches to coal liquefaction.
