Abstract

The old joke ‘If you can’t be a brain surgeon you should be a hairdresser’ may not be so far removed ‘physically’ from the truth as it seems. Apart from hatters (who have all gone mad anyway) I can think of no other profession which deals with the human head day in and day out, working only half an inch away from that most unique feature, the human brain. The brain is an incredible product of evolution that manages to synthesise a whole range of complex physiological and psychological tasks without any conscious effort, thus leaving the individual free to practise the skills necessary for survival in a social world.
