T Cell Deprivation and the Persistence of Experimental Protozoan Infections

The term ‘T-cell-deficient mouse’ has come to mean almost exclusively the congenitally athymic (homozygous nu/nu) or nude mouse. Nude mice are virtually completely athymic (Loor and Roelants, 1974) but may contain a few functional T cells (Rudnicka et al., 1978). Their usefulness, in a field where strain differences in parasite sensitivity are very marked, has recently been greatly enhanced by the transfer of the nu/nu genotype into several well-known inbred mouse strains.
