Abstract

This chapter reviews the reasons for the introduction of interaction into pattern recognition. Basically, pattern recognition, as it is applied in many diverse areas, is used to solve the problem of the detection of specific phenomena. There are usually very few theoretical guidelines on the optimal solution of the problem at hand so one of the functions of an interactive system is to obtain an insight into the complexity of the classification problem; this is the part commonly referred to as pattern analysis.
