Abstract

In chapter 1 we saw that, for a function defined by y = f(x), the derivative \(\frac{{dy}}{{dx}}\) is a measure of (i) the gradient of the tangent to the curve y = f(x) at any point (x, y) on the curve, and (ii) the exact rate of change of y with respect to x. This leads immediately to two important applications of differentiation.
