1865 (30 December) Joseph Rudyard Kipling born in Bombay, the son of John Lockwood Kipling and Alice Kipling, née Macdonald. (RK never used the name Joseph, which was that of his paternal grandfather; the name Rudyard was from Lake Rudyard in Staffordshire, where his parents met.)
