Abstract

Stellite 6 is one of the materials which can benefit from the Plasma Assisted Hot Machining Process. This paper examines the reasons for an improvement in machinability with preheating. It is shown that the chip formation mode alters from brittle through ductile to a serrated type of chip having adiabatic shear zones. A similar transition occurs when merely cutting speed is increased. However it is shown that shear stress on the tool rake face differs greatly for the two cases. The reasons for this together with the suitability of ceramic tooling in hot machining are discussed.
