Summary

A study of the process of cropping single tubes and bundles of tubes is presented. Experiments have been carried out on large (1 to 1.2 in.outside diameter) and small (0 23 in. outside diameter) tubes. The mean diameter/wall thickness ratio of all the tubes considered in this analysis was between 14 and 17. The materials used have been mild steel, M.316 stainless steel, carbon-manganese steel, PE16 nickel alloy, work hardened copper and an Al-Si alloy. Empty tubes and tubes filled with either an extremely brittle substance (borax glass) or ductile metals such as commercially pure aluminium have been cropped using different types of blade. A simple empirical relation for predicting the peak cropping load for single tubes and bundles of tubes has also been developed.
