Abstract

When organising the academic conference on whose papers this book is based, and when preparing the chapters which follow, I resolved that the overused and uselessly vague word ‘quango’ would not appear, except, if absolutely necessary, in this book’s title. There, at least, it would give readers some general idea of what the book was about. With some exceptions, particularly in Chapter 2, where the value of the term as a general signpost to the subject may justify its use, this practice applies.
