From Lawrence Langer, GBS and the Lunatic (London: Hutchinson, 1964) pp. 30–1, 59–60. Lawrence Langner (1890–1962), patent specialist and theatre director, was born in Swansea and went to America in 1911. In 1918 he founded the Theatre Guild, which gave the world premiére of Heartbreak House in New York in November 1920. He first met the Shaws in London shortly afterwards (see below, pp. 296–7).
