From W. R. Titterton, typescript of an interview held at the Humanities Research Center, Austin, Texas. (Shaw’s replies were published by Titterton, under the title ‘Bernard Shaw Explains the War’, in the Sunday Dispatch, 6 April 1941.) In September 1940 the American Congress enacted legislation which provided for the lending to Britain of fifty US destroyers and the granting by the British to the US of leases of naval and air bases in British Guiana, several West Indian Islands and Newfoundland.
