Abstract
Any discussion of the health care of mothers and children in any country must include at least some background information on the general social and societal events, as well as information on general health care for all people in the country. The reason for this is obvious — namely, that what occurs in society as a whole determines what happens in the health field. In the final analysis, it is the people in a society who determine the kind of health care they want. Furthermore, what is planned and provided for the health care of mothers and children is a part of the overall plan for health care for everyone. Therefore, it is important to understand some of the major events affecting both the general picture as well as the field of MCH in the USA.
