The contribution of common infectious diseases of childhood to malnutrition

Abstract

The relationship between infectious diseases and the nutritional status of individuals and communities has long been recognised. Scrimshaw, Gordon and Taylor (1968) emphasised several aspects of this interaction. In the last decade some workers (Chandra, 1972; Awlrod, 1971) have studied the immune response in malnutrition, while others (Beisel, 1975) have tried to explain the physiopathological mechanisms governing the response of man and animal to varied types of pathogenic organisms.
