Abstract

Four out of five preschool children in a developing country are suffering from protein-energy malnutrition and in about one-tenth of these the malnutrition is severe. Illnesses tend to be more frequent in malnourished children. In rural areas, 35–50% of the deaths in children are in those under the age of five, and half of these deaths are on account of severe malnutrition. In the remainder, and particularly in deaths due to infectious diseases, malnutrition is the contributory cause.
