The Conference on International Economic Cooperation (CIEC) 1975–7

The term North-South dialogue has two connotations. In the first place it is now widely used to cover the whole area of negotiations and contact between the developed and underdeveloped world, and has become shorthand for these debates as well as for the issues which have emerged in them. Many of these have already been discussed. In the second place the term refers more specifically to that conference in which lay its direct origins. The CIEC, which began in 1975, rapidly became known as the North-South conference, and concluded in 1977. It is with this connotation and conference that the present chapter is concerned.
