Summary
Experimental results are presented which provide new information for the design of fixed mandrels used in the extrusion and drawing of tubes.
A hydrostatic extrusion-drawing apparatus is described, together with instrumentation to record strains in the bore of the hollow mandrel and force due to friction along the deforming material-mandrel interface.
Aluminium and copper specimens were extruded into tubes, while the frictional load, the fluid pressure and the drawing force, together with the hoop and axial strains in the bore of the mandrel were recorded simultaneously.
Experimental frictional loads and strain distributions are given for various extrusion pressure-drawing stress ratios.
