Vanishing English Landscapes

Abstract

Several friends of mine, coming at the end of an old country family, have put all the passion of their lives into preserving house, estate, possessions, pictures, books, archives — all the more so because they were at the end of their line — and handing on what they treasured so much: to whom? Usually, the National Trust. And what a good thing — better that it should be pickled and preserved than destroyed and dispersed.
