Concepts and achievements are reviewed together with the initial and continued development in the United Kingdom of lower extremity modular prostheses. The philosophy behind these developments is discussed. The present arrangements in relation to the use of modular limbs and the limb service in the UK are considered, together with possibilities for the future.
