To his Coy Mistress

  • Michael Craze

Abstract

This masterpiece was not made in six days or even six years. Stray connections with poems published by Cowley in 1647, Herrick in 1648 and Lovelace in 1647–49 suggest a beginning in England after Marvell’s return from abroad; the Cavalier tone suggests a London beginning. But there is evidence that he worked on the poem again in the 1670s and that its fmal perfection owed much to improvements made then.
