Psychopharmacology of Manic-depressive Illness

  • Chapter
Current Themes in Psychiatry 2

Abstract

The neurochemical and psychopharmacological hypotheses which have thus far been most frequently put forward to explain the pathogenesis of manic-depressive disorders have emphasised the possible role which noradrenaline (NA) and 5–hydroxytryptamine (5–HT) may play (Schildkraut, 1973). It is only recently that another neurotransmitter, dopamine (DA), has been seriously considered as being implicated in this condition.
