Abstract
I. Each of the major religions emerged as part of a now ancient culture. The cultures in question developed along different paths, in relative isolation, until very recently. Even now for most members of the human race cultural isolation is the ordinary condition of life.

A similar argument has been advanced by A. N. Whitehead, Religion in the Making (Cambridge University Press, 1926) Ch. III, p. 1, but seems to have had little impact.
