Abstract

The Kornilov revolt quickened the pace of events in Petrograd. The Bolsheviks won increasing support and in September they were the majority party in both the Petrograd and Moscow soviets. It was one thing however to dominate the soviets and quite another to stage a successful uprising. Trotsky (4/3) regards the formation of a military revolutionary committee as a major breakthrough. It was an organ of the Petrograd soviet and thus would help to legitimise the takeover.
