Abstract

When adjacent joints remain painless and mobile, arthrodesis of a major joint may be compensated for satisfactorily, whereas it may cause severe. disability in progressive rheumatoid disease. In the lower limb an arthrodesed joint may become an insuperable barrier to rising from a chair, and in the upper limb it may inactivate an otherwise useful hand.
