Abstract

The medical and surgical care of the patient with rheumatoid disease is best achieved by consultation between physician and surgeon in a combined out-patient clinic. As on average two new joints are affected by the rheumatoid process every 3 years, the patient requires constant psychological, as well as medical and surgical, support. And whereas it is not helpful to offer false hope, it is harmful to say to the patient: ‘Nothing can be done for you’. We are able to cure few, but can help many and give comfort to all. In the combined clinic the physician, surgeon and social workers also have the opportunity to learn much of the patient’s home and social environment. In treating rheumatoid disease it is said to be better to know the patient who has a disability rather than to know the disability which the patient has (Swanson, 1977). We believe it is best to know both.
