Abstract
The recent emergence of a physiology of analgesia and behavior is based on the demonstration of a morphine receptor (Goldstein et al., 1971) followed by the isolation and characterization of peptides with opioid or behavioral activity, that is, enkephalins (Hughes et al., 1975) and β-endorphin (Li and Chung, 1976). The precursor relationship of β-lipotropin (β-LPH) to the opioid peptides was then realized. Since then, other congeners of enkephalin and endorphin have been reported in tissues.
