Abstract
The pteridophytes include the ferns, club mosses and horse-tails. They are a very ancient group of plants, forming the dominant vegetation of the Paleozoic era, from the Upper Devonian, 260 million years ago to the end of the Lower Permian about 200 million years ago. Later, first the gymnosperms and then the flowering plants evolved and largely replaced them.
