The Breeding and Maintenance of Inbred Strains

  • Chapter
Inbred Strains in Biomedical Research

Abstract

Very little has been written about the best methods of breeding and maintaining an inbred strain. Many different breeding systems could be used. In this chapter a recommended system will be described (based on that of Lane-Petter and Bloom, 1957) and the details will then be justified. Similar systems have been described by Green (1968) and Hansen et al. (1973), and Falconer (1972) has considered some aspects of the problem.
