Modern studies in biology, psychology and physiology are all agreed in rendering incredible the doctrine of the immortality of the soul. Of all the great religions, it is Buddhism that has come out most strongly against this false notion. The doctrine of anattā, which teaches that there is no immortal soul in man, is the bedrock of Buddhist teaching. Modern biblical scholarship also has now come round to the view that in the Bible there is no notion of an immortal soul inhabiting the body. At the same time the popular Christian belief of the resurrection of the flesh into a heavenly world, conceived more or less in physical terms, has been discredited. Any eternalistic notions about man therefore are ruled out.
