Abstract
This chapter deals with the computer and computational aspects of Computer Assisted Learning. It is concerned with choice of equipment, systems design, systems analysis, programming and computer management. In many cases the cal practitioner in the science disciplines will be implementing his work on an existing computer, probably a computer purchased for some other purpose and which cannot be tailored to cal. It is hoped that readers in this position, who at first might think it pointless to continue with this chapter, will not take this view; while this chapter cannot be as pertinent to those working within the constraints of an existing system as to those designing a new one, it does try to set out some principles important to the full success of cal of which all practitioners should be aware.
