Marking zoo animals for identification

Abstract

Compared with techniques for marking wild animals in the field, the marking of zoo animals is relatively unstudied. Recent reviews of field marking methods for mammals and birds (Twigg, 1975; Marion and Shamis, 1977) cite 155 and 219 references respectively. Apart from papers in the International Zoo Year Book (especially Volume 8; see references), little has been written about marking methods for zoos. This chapter surveys existing literature and summarises reports which I have recently received from colleagues in other zoos.

David Ashton, MA, VetMB, MRCVS, graduated from Clare College Cambridge and qualified at the Cambridge University School of Veterinary Medicine. After four years in general practice, two in Yorkshire and two in London, he became Veterinary Officer with the Zoological Society of London at Whipsnade Park.
