Behavioural and Anatomical Aspects of Monocular Vision in Birds

Abstract

In recent years, anatomical and physiological studies have changed our view of the avian visual system. They have revealed a number of similarities in the visual pathways between mammals and birds. At least seven areas receive primary projections from the retina (Cowan et al., 1961; Hirschberger, 1967, 1971). In five of them, efferent connections are still unknown or ill-defined. Hence, attention will be restricted to the two main afferent pathways whose target is the telencephalon.
