Summary

Haemocompatibility of nonphysiological materials is of increasing importance. The basis of assessing such compatibility has shifted from the quantification of erythrocyte damage to estimation of clotting capacity. Specified in terms of the number of circulatory thrombocytes and the bleeding time, this yields significantly more relevant information for ranking materials in relation to their blood compatibility than does assessment of haemolysis alone.
