Summary

Haemoperfusion over a packed bed alumina column is suggested for the removal of excess phosphate ions from the blood of uraemic patients. The alumina particles are coated with blood compatible phosphate-permeable polymers. Poly-HEMA and collodion-based coatings have been tested in preliminary in vitro simulated haemoperfusion experiments with fresh human blood. Collodion based coatings exhibit good blood compatibility. Additional work is required to define the limitations and refine the proposed system.
