Abstract

In his study of the properties of various methods of systematic data collection, Coombs (1964, Chapter 2) uses the method of pair comparisons as his base for assessing the relative power (channel capacity) and the capability of checking for inconsistency (redundancy) of other more complex methods. The method which is best adapted to examine cognitive mapping is the ‘pair of pair’ method, having the form ‘Which pair is more similar — (A,B) or (C,D)?’, but it is entirely unfeasible for anything but a trivially small number of objects.
